Read it as a stack, not a scoreboard

Coverage of Asian AI is usually organised by country, which is the least useful cut. The supply chain does not stop at borders: a Chinese accelerator is fabricated in Taiwan, on equipment built in Japan, around memory made in Korea. The directory is therefore sorted by layer first.

The top ten

Ranked on disclosed scale, which rewards incumbency: the head of this list is memory, foundry, and packaging, not model labs. How the score is built.

What each market is actually good at

Company counts are a measure of coverage, not of capability. What the rankings show is specialisation: each of these markets holds a different segment of the same supply chain.

China

56 companies · best rank #5

China has the most companies here and the widest spread across layers, because it is the only market building a full domestic stack. Breadth is not the same as depth: several of its most consequential firms are unlisted, and so unrankable.

Concentrated in Edge AI & Devices and Enterprise Applications.

Japan

42 companies · best rank #4

Japan is strongest where the stack is least visible: lithography optics, photoresists, wafer handling, testing, precision components. Few of these firms sell anything an AI user touches, and most of the world’s accelerators cannot be made without them.

Concentrated in Equipment & Materials and Silicon & Foundry.

What the rank cannot see

The index scores disclosed financial scale. That is a real measure and a narrow one, and the distance between the two is where most of the interesting companies live.

23 of the 164 companies profiled here carry no rank — privately held, state-backed, or a subsidiary whose numbers are folded into a parent’s. They are not absent from the stack. They are absent from the filings.

  • 01.AI no published revenue or market capitalisation
  • AUBO no published revenue or market capitalisation
  • ByteDance no published revenue or market capitalisation
  • Elite Robot no published revenue or market capitalisation
  • EngineAI no published revenue or market capitalisation
  • Fourier no published revenue or market capitalisation

Two further limits worth stating plainly. The score is weighted toward revenue, so it measures the size of a business rather than the importance of a technology — a materials supplier with one irreplaceable product will always rank below a diversified conglomerate. And it is a snapshot: rank movement between updates is usually currency and disclosure timing, not a change in the industry. Read the methodology.
